Cat Stevens Claims Coldplay Ripped Him Off

Cat Stevens says that Coldplay didn’t rip off Joe Satriani for the sound in their song, “Viva La Vida”. He says that the band actually ripped his “Foreigner Suite” sound.

The band denied allegations by Satriani of copyright infringement with the song, but Stevens still says he has the claim on it:

“There’s been this argument about Coldplay stealing this melody from Joe Satriani,” he said. “But, if you listen to it, it’s mine! It’s the [1973 song] ‘Foreigner Suite’, it is!”

Have a listen to Cat Steven’s song, “The Foreigner Suite Pt. 1″:

And now Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”:

Now listen to Joe Satriani’s “If I Could Fly”:

I don’t get the Stevens/Coldplay claim, but I do hear the striking resemblance in Satriani’s song. Stay tuned on how that suit plays out. Coldplay’s version sounds like Satriani Unplugged.
